Peter Wawerzinek
Intoxication and excess
In the novel Schluckspecht by Bachmann Prize winner Peter Wawerzinek, everything revolves around the love of alcohol, intoxication, addiction, boozing - by someone who knows all this, to the point of self-destruction. It started with the cheerful Egészségdre Palinka from Aunt Luci, sniffing the rum pot continued. Then followed eggnog, merry drinking rounds with friends, tests of courage, beer, wine, a wild life for art, women, parties, problems, crashes, brandy, liquor. The world-weariness of the hero, rejected by his parents, and the attempt to forget it, lead to an incredible night ride to the abysses of excess. But like the author Peter Wawerzinek himself once did, his novel character manages to pull himself out of the swamp of alcohol by his own hair in an almost miraculous way.
